Tammy Dee Owens and David Lee, Condemned serial killer slashes arms The Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C.

Hours before his scheduled execution, a condemned serial killer slashed his arms early Thursday with a razor blade he had swallowed a week ago, prison officials said. Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins received 20 stitches for wounds he inflicted to his wrists and elbows, Corrections Department spokeswoman Robyn Zimmerman said. Gaskins, who has confessed to killing 13 people, was scheduled to die in the electric chair at 1 a.m. today for the murder of a 14th victim. "We don't know if he was trying to kill himself or delay the execution," said Ms.

Zimmerman. "He's a very unpredictable, cunning person." "The execution will go on," she added. Gaskins told corrections officers he swallowed the razor blade before being moved to the death house today. He said he coughed up the blade early Thursday, cut himself and then swallowed the blade again. Gaskins "coughed up the blade again Thursday afternoon and gave it to one of the two officers in his cell.

He told the officers that was the only blade he had swallowed, authorities said. Guards discovered Gaskins bleeding beneath his bed covers when they brought his breakfast. "He did it under the sheets, and never moved and never made a sound," Me. Zimmerman said. Gaskins was weak- when the guards found him, she said.

"But it does not appear that he lost enough blood to alter his blood count. He is stable." Security was increased, although Gaskins already was under 24-hour Ms. Zimmerman said. Owens, 2432 Nathan, Apt. 4, Kingsport; Chapter 7.
